Deep in the Backfield

“Get your mitts offa me!
If I wanted Bears grabbing at me,
I’d head down to The Castro.”

Steve Smith
NFL fullback, Madden Bowl champ, ALS’er.
August 30, 1964 – November 20, 2021
Aged 57 years.

Most recognized for: Steve’s job on the field was to be the battering ram for star running backs like Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson. Paving the way and taking the tough hits, teammates heralded him as “the toughest fullback they’ve ever seen”… even going so far as to call him “Superman.” But after a 20 year battle, Lou Gherig’s disease turned out to be Steve’s kryptonite.
