No Pride, No Joy

“No. For the last time…
My name is not Isaac. It’s Charley.
I sing Country & Western tunes.
I do not serve drinks on The Love Boat.”

Charley Pride
Singer, songwriter, square peg.
March 18, 1934 – December 12, 2020
Aged 86 years.

Most recognized for: During his days as a Negro League all-star pitcher, Charley started recording country songs. A few years, some heavy airplay, and a Grammy nomination later, large crowds fell silent as he walked onstage… not expecting to see someone with “a permanent sun tan,” as he put it. But after a bout with COVID-19, the “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'” singer finally got his chance to do so.
