Most recognized for: In the 60’s, John was one of the 13 original “Freedom Riders’ who protested segregated public transportation in the deep South. He managed to turn getting bloodied at Alabama bus stations into career in politics & served in Congress as Senior Chief Deputy Whip until pancreatic cancer punched his ticket to ride.
